Where is there official documentation about what these codes are used for?

Sorry, you are now damaging the OSM database by removing the CRS code for
other locations, such as Stanmore.

CRS codes are not only for National Rail stations. They are also for other
locations useful for railway ticketing and also for railway operational
purposes.

For example, Baker Street, Stanmore, Finchley Road, Newbury Park, etc., all
have their CRS codes which are used in rail timetables.

I will add back all the CRS codes for these locations as these codes are used,
verifiable from timetable data, and can be processed by programs dealing with
rail data.
