Hi,

It appears the Llangollen Canal has breached just North of Bridge 31, with a large washout of the embankment and significant damage to the canal bed. I hate to think what any boaters afloat suffered, but there are no reports of casualties.

This is a significant event for Welsh Waters as the canal is used to transport drinking water (to Hurleston Reservoir) and lots of boaters (including myself on several occasions). Reports of a "sink hole" seem unlikely to me, especially as the breach appears to be close to a stream culvert - a frequent cause of collapses.

I've attempted a first-cut to map the damage with an approximate area of the hole, but tagging canal breaches is somewhat of a challenge, so would appreciate suggestions!

barrier=breach       - custom as "breach with a big hole" isn't widespread (thankfully!)
embankment=yes       - there is a significant hole caused by water flow
man_made=embankment  - more common for data-consumers but debatable man_made
access=no            - stop routing, especially for the footway
natural=Canal Breach
start_date=2025-12-21

I'd expect more access controls to be added by CaRT in time (likely fencing, then plant access tracks), but this is at least a start.

Happy Holiday Mapping,

James
