From http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Verifiability : "Verifiability is an important concept to OpenStreetMap. OSM data should, as far as is reasonably possible, be verifiable." The land can easily be verified, but the names? In most cases they are probably the names used by the mapper and his family, but nobody else. More from that page: "... a tag/value combination is verifiable *if and only if* independent users when observing the same feature would make the same observation every time." Most of the names are therefore unverifiable and should (eventually) be removed, not re-tagged. However, as others have said, let's not lose any sleep over it, and most of all, don't jump down the throats of people who are doing their best.
