I don't really know where to start, since nothing at https://leaflet-extras.github.io/leaflet-providers/preview/ quite fits the bill. The most muted I could I could find (that still has blue ocean and ability to see the streets under a transparent layer) is Esri_WorldTopoMap, but not ideal I don't know how to style basemaps, though I've seen that MapBox makes it possible. I just guess there are so many attributes to style that it would be a pretty time-consuming. Would be helpful if there were "similarity" measures for the common basemaps... A note: I see now that the tiles work when zoomed in one more level.... so that's an improvement...
