I do this not so much for later conflation, but as it acts effectively as a "source" tag, adding useful richness to the node history. The GNIS import created many duplicates: there I tend to merge tags rather than delete information someone may have a use for in the future. We're not sort of disk space, and it's hard to predict what's useful later.
