This is not a vote; it is a discussion. Although the distinction becomes blurred sometimes, in discussions it is common to think about an issue, balance the arguments that have already been said, and then write down one's own opinion and the reasoning behind it. Simply +1/-1ing someone else's opinion is not something that furthers the discussion, and generally frowned upon in mailing lists.
