A few other tips and comments re using the old topographic maps:

1. The contours and heights are in feet: If you add a tag for
elevation (height=???), remember to convert to meters. There are many
trig beacons on mountain peaks that can be added.
2. Consider whether it is appropriate whether to use the data from a
topographic map over 50 years old. It makes sense to do so for mountain
peaks and many (but not all) rivers and streams). Use place names with
discretion as so many have changed. It is often useful to use old
topographic map in conjunction with satellite imagery.
3. Re-align the slippy map with GPS tracks whenever you move from one
area to another. In JOSM use the plugin imageryadjust.

I have found some more old out of copyright maps that I am sending to
Grant, which will be added in due course.
