I’ve only had a chance to see these now.

Great work guys! This is awesome stuff to look at. I think it will be great for
the physical terrain stuff. Mountain peaks are a dead giveaway. Rivers seem not
too bad (although a few would have changed in certain areas due to human
influence). It’s going to take a little discretion adding content from this
layer, but the value is definitely there.

Nicely done.

A few other tips and comments re using the old topographic maps:

1. The contours and heights are in feet: If you add a tag for elevation
(height=???), remember to convert to meters. There are many trig beacons on
mountain peaks that can be added.
2. Consider whether it is appropriate whether to use the data from a
topographic map over 50 years old. It makes sense to do so for mountain peaks
and many (but not all) rivers and streams). Use place names with discretion as
so many have changed. It is often useful to use old topographic map in
conjunction with satellite imagery.
3. Re-align the slippy map with GPS tracks whenever you move from one area
to another. In JOSM use the plugin imageryadjust.

I have found some more old out of copyright maps that I am sending to Grant,
which will be added in due course.

Hi Guys,

With help from Lance, we have converted a large set of old, out of
copyright government topographic map sheets into a web slippy map.

See them here:
http://grant.dev.openstreetmap.org/za-ooc-slippy/

The map sheets are mostly 1st edition from the 1940s and 1950s. No freeways!

It is also possible to use these maps as source material in JOSM,
Potlatch 2 and Merkaartor
 * JOSM: Preferences, WMS, Add imagery layer, type TMS. TMS url:
http://grant.dev.openstreetmap.org/za-ooc-slippy/
 * Potlatch 2: Click background (top left), click edit, add using URL:
http://grant.dev.openstreetmap.org/za-ooc-slippy/$z/$x/$y.png

At the moment there are a few bugs, which I'll get around to fixing:
 * Few misplaced sheets. e.g.: Richards Bay
 * Pure black pixels are incorrectly set as transparent.
 * Sheets are not trimmed to map only. (headers + borders + reference)
 * Missing sheets...

Would love to hear what you guys think or any suggestions...

/ Grant
