I also have had bad results with navit's search function - you have to
tick "partial match" and give your query in the form "Johannesburg,
rissik" and sometimes that works.

Depending on what you want to do, trekbuddy is often good enough, but
it only uses tiles, not vector data, and only has the zooms that
you've put into it.  That makes it quite light, however, and it shows
your position and speed, and records tracks.
