Actually, I don't think the university should be afraid of receiving any
supeanas. Now, if they received subpoenas on the other hand, there might
be some serious business.

Illegal File Sharing on the Campus Network
*From Office of the CIO*
DON'T BE THE RIAA'S NEXT LAWSUIT!
REMOVE PEER-TO-PEER FILE SHARING PROGRAMS FROM YOUR COMPUTER NOW!
Seton Hall University recently received a large number of notices from
the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) complaining that
users of the campus network are violating copyright laws by sharing
copyrighted files without permission.
When the University receives such a notice, an investigation is started
to determine whether or not the alleged file sharing violates copyright
law. The University's policy of the appropriate use of computer
facilities states that users found violating copyright laws may face
disciplinary sanctions, including the loss of the use of the campus
network. The RIAA has also begun suing college students who the RIAA
believes has violated its copyrights. While the University has not yet
received any supeanas requesting records of student use of the campus
network, in the event the University does receive such requests, it
would be obliged to turn over the requested use records to the RIAA.
At this time the notices from the RIAA are primarily for the use of Ares
Galaxy and Wares, two popular peer-to-peer file sharing programs.
However, the RIAA has the capability to monitor traffic over the
Internet and to detect peer-to-peer exchanges of music files using most
popular peer-to-peer programs.
University IT Services recommends that any user who has a peer-to-peer
file sharing program installed on their computer carefully review the
setup of that program to make sure it is not inadvertantly sharing
copyrighted material. If you have any questions about the legality of
the files you are sharing, we recommend that you remove the file sharing
program from your computer.
