I have a script similar to what the others have said. It just runs checking last modified date and time of a log file, and cross checks it against a spread sheet I have that has the time it should be running and the last time it ran. If the log file time stamp is outside those parameters It will send an email letting me know what script got hung up.

You can also have your scripts update a completion file which another process monitors that will send out emails if it's not updated by a certain time. I am using email notification when scripts have completed, but the only way to be aware of failed scripts is if someone realizes that they did not receive an email notification that the script did run.
