If you're a gamer with relatively new hardware, I think it would be beneficial to be on a distro closer to the bleeding edge to take advantage of the performance improvements that come with newer drivers and kernels even at the cost of potential instability.
That's the main reason I'm on an arch-based distro but since he said he'd rather not go down that path, Fedora seems like the next best choice.
