Well, I certainly don't get any numbers at all.  Instead, when I press
Numbad-1, I hear "bottom left." Next, I press numpad-8, and I hear something
like "start", then I hear

"The list of items in this folder is filtered.  You may not see all items
that are in this folder."

Further pressing of numpad-8 seems to produce only garbage, one- or two-word
phrases that seem not to relate at all.  I wish it were otherwise.

What I do is use the numpad1 and then go up with the numpad 8. This tells
how many new and total messages.
