That is consistent with my admittedly failing memory. I think most
manufacturers have gone to the 3.5mm plugs these days although they
are calling them eighth-inch. At least I haven't had any problems
with lose plugs in a decade or so.

At one time I had problems with eighth inch plugs as opposed to 3.5mm
plugs. The 3.5mm are slightly larger and fit the jacks better. I
haven't seen this problem for a long time though. Possibley you have
an old pair of earphones with the eighth inch plug instead of the the
3.5mm plug.
