All I know is, when I plug a 3.5mm plug into an eighth inch jack, it is looser, and when I plug an eighth-inch plug into a 3.55mm jack, it is tighter. So, that should prove that the 3.5mm plug is smaller than the eighth inch plug, no matter what all those numbers are in that message he sent. Pam.

That is consistent with my admittedly failing memory. I think most
manufacturers have gone to the 3.5mm plugs these days although they
are calling them eighth-inch. At least I haven't had any problems
with lose plugs in a decade or so.

Let's see, there are 25.4 mm in an inch. Dividing by 8 gives 3.175 which is
less than 3.5. Therefore, the 1/8 inch is smaller than the 3.5 mm.

Actually, the eighth inch plugs are a little larger than the 3.5mm plugs.

At one time I had problems with eighth inch plugs as opposed to 3.5mm
plugs. The 3.5mm are slightly larger and fit the jacks better. I
haven't seen this problem for a long time though. Possibley you have
an old pair of earphones with the eighth inch plug instead of the the
3.5mm plug.
