Alan,

Can't you use any key to set whether your function keys are the standard ones,
or the newer HP features?

I have a desktop keyboard which works as you describe, setting the function
keys across the top to do other tasks than their usual f1 through f12; however,
there's a key which toggles them between their new functions and their
traditional functions. I wonder if there isn't such a key for HP laptops like
this?

The problem with the FN or function key is, each manufacture chooses what
functions the FN key controls. For example, on my HP 17.3 inch laptop, HP
has used the very top row of keys for all sorts of other things for example,
F12 when used alone is the toggle to toggle WI-FI on and off. If I want it
to work in the triditional way set fourth by Microsoft, I need to hold down
the FN key wile pressiing F12. It can pose a bit of a problem for the blind
in that you'll need sighted assistance in knowing what the defaults are on
the very top row of keys. On my laptop, one key can rotate the picture on
screen. I'm personally confounded by why anybody would want to rotate the
picture but there go! LOLQ

Subject: Working with the FN key on Keyboard

Hello Everyone,

I have an FN key on my keyboards for both a laptop and a desktop. I
understand there is not a setting in the WE control panel to make this talk.
Is there an app or other work around to help know what settings are
occurring when using the FN key?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Barbara
