Hello, Please see instructions below. Yes, this is something in adobe Reader that you have to disable.
1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences. The Preferences window opens. 2. In the Categories list on the left, select Security (Enhanced). 3. In the Sandbox Protections area, clear the check box Enable Protected Mode at start up and every other checkbox. 4. Click OK. I played hell with the reader for about a week after getting my Windows 8.1 system, until people suggested that I do this, and for some reason, it took care of this very issue. I simply couldn't get anything but a few lines of a document to read, couldn't move forward at all, but after installing the reader from Ninite I was good to go.
