Hi,
Windows has a built in system image utility that has worked well for me. I
have an external hard drive and I make a new image about once a week so if
something happens I have my exact image to restore back to my computer.

Subject: Final outcome
OK, guys, so regarding my Win 8.1 laptop and the whole shenanigan I wrote
about the other day with me really screwing up my recovery etc...
So, I called Asus. The first rep I spoke with didn't no jack crap! It
was very very obvious she didn't. So, I called back, and got another rep.
This rep really! really! knew his stuff! First of all, I found out that
the boot menu is accessed by booting, then tapping on the escape key.
Second of all, I tried, and when that didn't work, not only did he tell me
what to change in the Bios, he literally grabbed a lab test machine of
identically the same model, and step by step, keystroke by keystroke
walked me step by step through what keys to hit, and where to scroll
within the bios to fix it. We not only disabled secure boot, but we also
got the boot priority set correctly as well. So now, my system boots
first to DVD, then USB, and finally the hard drive. I have tested it out
over here, and it works perfectly! The guy even helped me with
downloading a utility called Backtracker. We later found out that this
option wouldn't work, as it needs the recovery partition, so
it looks like in order for me to get back that exact image, I'll have to
send the unit off to them to reimage the drive. But! The good news is, I
have a full retail copy both of Windows 7, and also one of Windows 8.1, so
if something goes wrong, God forbid, now that I have the unit correctly
booting to DVD, I'm totally set to ease. I'm probably gonna look now at
some of those programs you all recommended for making an exact image of my
drive.
In addition to those recommended, does anyone know if Image for Windows
from Terrabyte Unlimited has been updated to work with Win8? If so, I
really don't have much after all my bills to throw around, but I may go
ahead and just bite the bullet and upgrade my copy.
Chris.
