When you start a new message or a reply, read your title bar, if it says normal, press windows-up arrow. This will maximize the window. For me the message reads when the window is maximized. Exiting Windows live mail sometimes switches the message window to normal where it won't read until you hit win-up arrow once again.
And of course Windows Live Mail isn't even consistent. This time when I exited and went back in my message windows stayed maximized and read.
