Hi:
I use Microsofts sql compact edition which is a file based database engine
and I tend to use Ado.net as the interface to the engine from inside my
Visual Studio Projects.
There is no stand-alone user interface to use any database you create in the
Microsoft Compact Edition so it would be for scripters rather than a user
just firing it up and being able to create and manage a DataBase.
There is a SQL Server Management Studio program but that is likely getting
very complicated for most individuals and, or, scripters and not what you
are talking about.
I peeked at the site and what is wrong with azzcardfile?
It looks like it does allot of things and sounds like it might be simpler
than a true database to manage.
The one drawback I found is that it is xml based and that is very slow but
it sure seems to have allot of built-in features for someone wanting a
stand-alone data platform to work with in something like a personal phone
book application.
I didn’t see anything about coding against it from inside something like a
VBScript but I am guessing they have a means of doing that, perhaps not,
don’t know but what is wrong with that data platform?
Why ReInvent the wheel?
Another option may be the Microsoft Access Database Platform. It is a file
based database but is pretty fast and already geared twoard working in
Microsoft Office environments.
How well any of these will work for including their engines in a WindowEyes
scripting project is another story but it may work.
When you use the keywords "stand-alone" what do you mean?
Do you mean a program that lets you create a database and then somehow
access information all in the same user interface via say a few of linked
forms?
That’s what it sounds like azzcardfile and, of course, the Microsoft Office
friendly Access Database allow you to do already.
Or do you mean a management program to create and manage a database so you
can write scripts against it?
You also mention import and export and most databases have import and export
features by placing data into either a xml file or csv file for moving data
into and out of a database for use in other applications.
I really don’t understand what you are looking for in terms of something
that doesn’t already exist out there.
Perhaps there are problems using some types of databases while running under
the WindowEyes scripting Model Engine?
Anyway, it is an idea but I think it has already been done to death by other
third-party programs like the ones mentioned above and several other really
good options, at least if using them from inside a scripting project I
think.
If not sure just describe what you want to do like...
Sit at the computer, fire up the program, pick some options and type in some
columns and then save my database layout.
Then use the programs user interface to do things like save records, read
records, sort them and print them.
This is what I think of when I think of a Stand-Alone database platform.
That is one where all the actual database work is done for you behind the
scenes and you just work within a simplified user interface and sounds like
what you want after looking at that azzcardfile website.
What is missing from azzcardfile or Microsofts Access Database or others
that exist out there on the net?
Are they too complex for simple usage or do they lack accessibility or what
makes you not want to use one of the existing stand-alone database
platforms?

Hi Ric,

Just my 2c suggestion. One of the most lacking program category is a good
stand-alone database with good export/import facilities. Perhaps if you
look to www.azzcardfile.net you can have a good idea and perhaps create an
alternative.

Hi Rod: Actually I was thinking of common things general computer users
would use like phone books, perhaps scheduling software or even some small
business packages.
The thing is that there is the MS Calander and related software most folks
could use but I don't know how accessible it is.
Also, there are other things folks might want to have like some of the
programs you scriptors have created ie. News weather and others that are
free so I am not sure if there is anything that most general users, not
scripters would want to have that they currently don't have or would like
something a little more comprehensive but totally accessible.
I would be developing in Visual Studio so would have access to some really
powerful features like a database and the MS UI controls along with other
very powerful tools in case some applications were more complex in nature.
But, I would charge of course something and since there would be alow cost I
would only build something if there either were enough folks who would pay a
little or someone wanted a custom project and willing to pay a little more
if it were something I was also interested in like some business software.
These would be folks most likely to be on this list since the scripters are
likely to already have what they want or have created a down and dirty
version of something.
As for actual scripting I might consider it but as you know I am not all
that interested in creating scripts but it is a possibility if there were
something worth while slogging through and I could get the scripts created
in Visual Studio so I could also use the managed UIA accessibility
components.
But that is what I am tossing around in the back of my mind and why I
elected this list instead of the scripting list.

Hi Rick,

Two things:
First, I'm not sure what you're asking.
Second, I suggest you submit this question, with a bit more clarification,
to the scripting list.

Many thanks,

Rod

Hi: I was thinking about developing a new Website to do some contract
programming and, or, develop some accessible scripts or software.
Is there any type of program or scripting most folks would pay a few bucks
for if available in a screen reader friendly format?
There is already allot of software out there, free, and some of it is pretty
accessible so I am not sure there would be anything related to this lists
members but thought I would ask since I am considering the options before
figuring out if it would be worth while to even get into this field for
profit.
