Jed, laptop suggestions can be a hit and miss! For instance, I won't touch a Dell laptop with a ten-foot pole! I don't like proprietary stuff too much.
I do like Toshiba, Sony (this one can be pricey because of its name), Asus and Acer. I don't like HP and I frankly believe that the strength of the company is in the production of printers! I do have a three-year-old Sony laptop which runs Windows7 64Bit Professional; It is a refurbished one, the last one on display when I picked it up. As such, I was able to negotiate my own price down to what I felt comfortable with before making the purchase. As a general rule, I don't buy brand-new laptops; I ask for refurbished ones, carefully examine the specs and even play with the machine before making a decision. I don't buy new because they go obsolete so fast! Moreover, the refurbished ones I buy had been previously leased out to corporations that were just returning them for upgrades. Their hard drives are reformatted, new OS installed, and then sold for a lot less after the seller has made tons of pennies from the lease.
