Hello Marc, I had Java installed when I first got the computer, Windows 7, 64-bit, now running Windows 9.1. Java kept wanting to update and I could find no way to opt out of the toolbars it wanted to install. So I uninstalled the program. I've encountered few instances where this might be causing an issue. http://www.1800petmeds.com/ I get a message saying that the website uses Java and an ok button. Another is the CenturyLink website. http://centurylink.net/ I can log in and read my e-mail, and the "Reply" seems to work, but I can't send a new message. I get a message saying that the website requires a program I don't have. When I check with the Window-Eyes Mouse, I find the word JavaScript. I understand that the two programs are different, but is JavaScript something I should download and install on my computer? I use IE 11. Is it an add-on for IE? I only have one add-on: Microsoft Office Cash Handler. I use Office 2010 to bring in my e-mail, so don't really need the CenturyLink page to work, but why can't they make it accessible just on principle. Sigh. Smile. And speaking of accessibility, When I try to log in on the Amazon page, I get the following message: Important Message! Type the characters you see in this image: captcha Type characters See a new challenge I'm forced to use the website for screen readers now. So I tried an experiment. I deleted the Amazon cookie and with no cookie, I used the Amazon link on my desktop. Since I cant sign in, I used the special screen reader link at the top and was taken to a more simplified site. I searched for kinetic sand and was taken to the same site for the results. I closed Amazon and went back to the desktop. I did not sign in, but theres now a cookie on my computer. When I used the desktop link for Amazon, it now takes me to a basic, stripped-down site of only 16 links and keeps me there. It keeps me there even if I search for something on Amazon through Google. The only way to use the initial site for screen readers is to delete the cookie and use the link at the top of the big Amazon page. But this is only good for one session. If I leave, its back to the baby site. I never had any problems with the regular site, and sometimes I do appreciate the baby site as I call it. What I find objectionable is that decisions are being made for me as a screen reader user. Sometimes product descriptions are more detailed on the regular site than what is displayed on the very stripped down site. Back underneath my rock now! Smile. But any thoughts on either subject above would be appreciated. Probably not. While Javascript is used on almost every modern website, Java is rarely used. Exceptions to this rule include online games and some proprietary Web applications in the work place. And most Java applications have compatibility issues with AT like screen readers.
