It only makes a difference if you are trying to access a web site that uses it to present something. Many online courses require that you have it installed. Some sites such as sports fantasy sites use it to present realtime stats, play by play, etc. Otherwise, it is likely not needed, but some version of Java is usually preinstalled on new PCs unless you build it yourself.
