Although it's been a while since I last did any EBaying, let me just
throw one idea on the board.
May it happen, that you did some shopping with a company located - say -
in China? The message could be written in a non-latin language, with no
real letters showing up. Had something like that happen at one point. If
you open the message, and try to arrow through it, will it tell you a
ton of question-marks or something similar? If you have two eyes nearby,
are they able to read anything off the screen, when the message is
displayed?
Not sure if any of this is of help to you, but it is worth considering.

customers help complaining about this problem but just received an
automatic response in reply informing me to login and leave a message.
Unfortunately, EBay seems to be becomeing less and less speech
friendly as time passes.
