Hi again all Problem fixed. One or both of 2 things solved it.
I unchecked a "use buffers" setting in the ports advanced settings, and found that databits had mysteriously changed to 7 instead of 8. As a separate bit of advice, Windows is quite capable of changing the comport setting that will work with your speech synth without telling you. In the case of the USB to serial convertor, if your speech synth won't work at all, go to the device manager and check the port number it's using, which may occasionally change for reasons which I certainly don't understand.
