Editing Outgoing Messages in Thunderbird

Hi, Folks.  I'm using WE 9.3.1.  Why can't i edit messages I'm sending 
out via Thunderbird? When I try to muve the cursor or backspace, I get 
the Windows default beep sound.  Thanks in advance.--Matthew Chao
