If you go to dropbox preferences on your computer, not on their website, there is an option to "Show Dropbox Badge." You may also hear the word "Down" indicating that you press the DOWN ARROW to change the option. Change this preference to "Never." For me, that eliminated all of the problems with Word and Excel files in my Dropbox folder. I get to preferences by finding Dropbox in the system tray, pressing SPACE which brings up a menu, and then DOWN ARROW until I get to Preferences.
