AMD or Intel, should be no trouble. I have run both interchangeably,
with no noticeable difference. As for speed of the CPU, I would not go
under 1.6, and definitely look for a duo or even quadro CPU system. When
comes to memory, RAM, I would strongly recommend you don't do anything
under 4GB, but if you can get more it will only benefit you. Make sure
your harddisk does run with at least 5400 RPM, as anything lower will
slow down all hard disk activity, of which modern computing has a lot.
Even a few milliseconds on each disk access will amount into several
minutes on a working day.
Since you are on a low budget, I would actually suggest you consider
looking on the net for good second-handed or refurbished laptops. Many
times you can get really good deals. For instance I am right now typing
on a Dell laptop of the business class kind. It is by no means
super-modern, and has its small limitations, but I got it for well under
400 included shipping, all refurbished, and have used it now for close
to two years. If you find you have anything left on your budget - after
buying the next PC - I would suggest you look at an SSD, to replace the
hard drive. It is up to ten times faster, and all your startup and
loading of data, will be running swiftly.
Do you end up with the choice of a high-speed CPU, or an SSD drive, I
would have gone for the SSD.
But for all the parameters, try to get as much as you can for your
money. Buying new, cheap and wanting good specs, you will have to forego
certain things. Cheap new computers often are flimpsy in their
construction, all cased in cheap plastics. They may not have the best
cooling construction, causing the computer to run overheated, and the
fan to speed up soon as you demand much from the unit. Again, a reason
to consider whether you could be better off in buying a one or two years
old computer, paying the same price, but getting a higher classed model.
Lastly comes what you have for personal preferences as to manufacturer,
size, weight and physical appearance. As you may have noted, the list
has lately been swarming from messages regarding keyboards and their
layout. So make sure you get a PC with a keyboard you can live with.
Hope any of this helped you out somehow.

Frustratingly, my fairly new laptop has irrepairably died and I need to get a
new one much sooner than expected. Since I didn't budget for a new one, I'm
going low budget this time. I was trying to find the minimum system
requiremetns for WE and wasn't finding it on the site. What do you all
recommend as far as processor speed? I've alsways been partial to intel, but
is AMD Ok too? I think my last laptop was an I5, but will I3 be OK? How about
RAM? I've realized that the primary things on do on my home laptop are use
basic Office programs, Quicken and internet browsing. I also do have some
videos that I project with an HDMI cable to our TV for my kids to watch. So, I
don't think I need a powerhouse computer - just something that will adequately
run WE. I do have Kurzweil 1000 and a scanner, but I probably only use that
for scanning mail since I read most books on my phone now. Would appreciate
your input. Hoping to stay under $500.
