Hello,

There was a long discussion at the beginning of the cast about how
accessibility is being considered at a higher priority than in the past.

In terms of the Edge browser it was talked about how it will use standard
Microsoft accessibility API's instead of giving the screen reader direct access
to the Document Object Model (DOM). They indicated this will improve security
and make web support be consistent with application support of accessibility.
It sounded like they needed some additional classes to be available in UIA
before screen readers could access the model. Windows 8+ has done significant
work in reducing unauthorized access to content which have made AT vendors
change the way they get information from the screen and now the web. If this
means it will be harder for malware to recognize that you are about to enter
your password on banking site and to start grabbing key input than this is a
good thing. I am not enough of a security geek to know exactly what
vulnerabilities Microsoft eliminated by having an additional layer of software
between our AT software and our browser, but personally, I am more concern
ed with how inaccessible Microsofts enterprise software like SharePoint and
Helpdesk are than that one out of 4 browsers can't currently be used with
screen readers.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn
