Hi Reeva, It is my understanding that Window-Eyes can read what is under the mouse pointer using two different techniques. The first, which has been around a very long time, is the off screen model (OSM). The OSM is a database that stores where stuff is on the screen. Or at least where the screen reader thinks stuff is on the screen. The OSM is populated by hooking into the video and interpreting the data that the CPU sends to the graphics card. The problem with this technique is that it is basically hacking the operating system. And, as time goes on, it will be harder and harder for screen readers to maintain an accurate OSM due to security restrictions in the operating system. Because of this and other complexities, the OSM is not always accurate and can't be relied upon in all programs and areas of Windows. The second is by using User Interface Automation (UIA). This is a more modern and secure approach that allows a screen reader to query the application directly to ask it where th ings are. For example, UIA is available in Internet Explorer and might be what Window-Eyes uses for mouse reading. I hope this bit of background helps you better understand why there are limitations and inconsistencies in reading what is under the mouse pointer. Best, Marc

Ok, have a question. I've been trying to not use the physical mouse as much since at ginormous magnification it's more time consuming. I'm using zt fusion with we key layout but ran into this when i was using zt and we together as seperate products. When i try using the mouse keys, most of the time it just dings at me. Um, what am i doing wrong? "the world has been against you from day one, tomorrow's never promised night has just begun, so sing with me we're all fucked" Walls Of Jericho Reeva _______________________________________________ Any views or opinions presented in this email are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent those of Ai Squared.
