Well, I am using version 9 here, and it works. Make sure you scan to
either MSWord, or MSExcel. Should you scan to PDF, you may want to try
opening it in things like QRead, if you have that software installed.

Running the Virtual View of WE on a scanned document, may not exactly
work. It is like doing an OCR on an OCR'ed document. If you want to do
it that way, you will have to set the scanner software to scan directly
to one of the file types Virtual View acknowledge, like TIFF. The
scanned image then will be a raw scanned picture of your document, and
all the OCR will be performed by the Virtual View. In such a case, use
other software than the Abby Finereader.

The interface of Abby - at least the version I have - seem quite simple,
compared to that of for instance the Nuance products. Yet, the OCR
quality is also somehow lower. But the price is far cheaper. Still, for
more than a year now, my Abby have done enough of a job, that I can live
with it.

One more tip, when opening the scanned document in MSWord, is that you
might want to make use of the Alt-period, and Alt-comma hotkeys. If you
only arrow up and down with your standard arrow keys, my experience is
that WE does not read all information, especially if the document holds
several columns.

Oh, and of course, make sure you scan the written side of the paper.
Otherwise, your document will hold blank pages. Sure, everyone should
know, but still a reminder.

Try with another document, and play around with your settings for both
brightness and resolution, even changing from color to grayscale mode,
might be what you want. For my part, Grayscale, 600dpi, and a brightness
near the middle - has proven to be the best settings. This though, may
differ from what scanner you have, exactly what kind of document you are
scanning, and even the paper and print quality of the document in question.

To judge the software useless, and a waste of money, would be a pity. It
is fully workable, and does a reliable enough job. One extra tip for
you, may be to wipe the scanner surface with a cloth designed for
window/glass cleaning. Make sure the surface is clean. That way, you
know you have done what you can, to ensure the best scanning results. A
poor scanned picture, will result in poor OCR recognition. Again, likely
you know all of this, but wanted to make sure it has been mentioned for
general reference.
