Hi,
Over the years, I have used both the external Double Talk and the Tripple Talk syns and would never bother with an external unit again. These units were of the serial type and both were quite expensive for what they were.

The Double talk needed to be turned off with the on off volume switch at the end of each session to save the internal battery. In time, the volume control became quite scratchy and eventually I gave it up.

The Tripple Talk went the same way but in a much shorter time frame. In comparison, I found the Tripple Talk to be not worth the money. Maybe the later versions have improved.

For some time now I have used a Creative usb external sound card costing around $60 connected to a pair of speakers with a volume control. If the volume ever becomes scratchy, it is an inexpensive solution just to replace the speakers. This setup has been working for years without any problems.

I mainly use Eloquence as my software syn and find it very responsive. The other benefit to using a software syn is that there are many good free voices which can be easily obtained.

Currently I have WE and Eloquence running through the external sound card and have another voice setup to run through the internal sound card if required. NVDA also is setup to run through the internal cardwhich gives me a way of tracing any problems if WE will not talk through the external card.

In short, save your money and get an external sound card as mentioned above. With the modern fast computers, lack of responsiveness is not a big a problem as it once was.

Neville.
