Jim, consider refreshing the screen with Insert-Backslash; perhaps this will make a difference. If the PDF file is an image though, you may need to perform OCR on it before you can read it.
I find that using the Acrobat Reader Pro DC, I frequently have to refresh the screen before I can read anything. It sure doesn't feel like the Acrobat Reader I've known from previous years. Be that as it may, it's possible there's a setting I need to tweak, but I don't know what that setting is.
