Yes I did record in mpg format. These are movies that I watched successfully on my old laptop but had also backed up to an external hard drive. I had one of those video to computer conversion kits. I do not recall if I ever tested the back up files on my previous laptop to in sure that what I moved to the external hard drive was copied correctly, I just assumed that it did as I have with all my other files.
