Seems to me, that Jaws and WinEyes defines the
"next Text-Line"
slightly different.
In WinEyes, you will hit N, to go to the next line of text, no matter if
it is immediately subsequent to the line you currently are at. In other
words, if you are at line 3, and line 4 has pure text, that is where you
will land.
Jaws, on the other hand, seems to define the N-key, as the "next line of
text, AFTER a non-text line". Meaning, you are at line 3, holding text.
Pressing the N, it will look for next link, button or whatever, and
thereafter find the first line of pure text subsequently. This could
easily mean you will be taken down to line 20, since all the lines
between 15 and 19, holds links and buttons.
Please note, the line numbering was for illustrative purposes only. Not
sure how to remedy the behavior of Jaws, if it even can be done. But I
too noticed right away, that Jaws clearly has a serious drawback, when
reading through a website. Many times, I would use the H-key, to get to
a heading, and then read from there, only using the N-key. In Jaws, for
all I have learned so far, I will have to use the N-key to get to the
first line of a block of text, then use the down-arrow to move through
the block, and whenever I hit a non-text line, use the N-key to get to
the next text-block. A whole lot more hand-moving, and really hoped that
I just had not discovered how to operate the screen reader optimally as
of yet.
So, more trained users, is there a setting in Jaws, to make it see each
and every text line - by using the N-key? Or, is the N-key only for
searching the first line of next block of text?
Not that it helps you much, but NVDA seem to have the same fall-back as
do Jaws. One of the places, where WinEyes has been superior. sad smiles.
