Going to a new modem/router combination shouldn't change anything.
But the routers all come out of the box open to everyone. And there are
always folks looking to hop onto someone elses network. So changing the
password should do the trick. There's also ways to hide your network and
require manual setup and password for any device to be allowed on your
network. Refer to the router documentation for this stuff.

Hi all, For some of the more tech savy people. I recently purchased an Aris
cable modem, and a Net Gear router. Since that time my data usage has gone up
quite a bit. I orginally had the modem/router combo from my provider. My
question is: With me having a separate router if the router is on even when no
one is using wireless, is there still a bit of data transfer between the router
and modem, thuse causing my data useage to go up a bit? I changed my router’s
login password from the generic one that was default and my useage did seem to
go down.. Any help thanks Tony C
