Hello Carol,
Thanks very much for your suggestion but I don't think that woulbe necessary
because Windows Media Player plays those MIDI files at the correct volume.
However, I don't like using that player as I can't wind back or forward
easily. Also, I can play MIDI files with WinAmp at the correct volume on my
Windows XP machine so there must be something wrong with the set-up of
Winamp on my Windows 8.1 machine. Winamp needs Direct X to be installed but
I don't seem to be able to install it properly on my Windows 8.1 machine.
That could probably be the cause of my woes with Winamp on this machine.
I would be very glad if you could explain to me how you could convert MIDI
files to wave or some other audio form.
Thanks so much again for your help.

If you would like to send me one of your midi files, I can try to raise
the volume on it and see if that is the problem. Note, I am not sure if
I actually have something that can convert midi to wav, but I am willing
to try.

Hello Carol,
Sorry for the late reply. I had some problem with my modem.
I got back my start-up sound when the computer technician switched my
system

My own sound scheme is called just "Default", not Windows Default. Some
times my scheme works, Some times it doesn't. When I go to the sound
scheme
in the control panel and test the sounds, they work. They just don't
always
work automatically. I just started my computer before typing this reply to
you and the sound scheme was not working.
I am also having another little problem with my WinAmp which was installed
by my computer technician. MIDI files are played very softly even though
the Winamp slider shows it is at 100 per cent. I can go to the system
sounds and turn up the volume but as soon as I replay the file, the volume
goes down. I have now uninstalled my Winamp and hope to reinstall it later
to see if it can be improved.
Sorry for troubling you with all my problems but none of my friends here
seem to know the answers.
Thanks again for trying to help.

Hi,
Sometimes, my sound schemes will disappear. Have you tried resetting
your default sounds? Check the volume for them under your "sndvol"
settings. Tab through the different settings and you will find speaker,
each program you have which might have an associated sound, system
sounds, which would be the one you want. I generally keep my system
sounds at about 1/2 of the speaker sounds. Depending on how you like to
hear things, you might even go down to about 10 percent of the volume.
Once you can get your system sound volume the way you want it, you
should be able to switch back to your personal preference sounds, which
I assume you saved once you created them. If you didn't, you will need
to re-create your sound scheme and then, make sure to save it. You
should not call it Windows Default as this might cause you some trouble
from time to time. Take care.

isn't due to malware.

Do you know how to open it? If so, you then tab to the setting you wish
to change.Page up or page down will increase or decrease the setting.
Your arrow keys will move by one point.
There is a difference between the way WE and JAWS handle the percentage
reporting. WE begins with 0 and can move above or below zero by units
of 10 with the keys I listed. JAWS, on the other hand, begins with the
percentage at 50 and moves by units of 5. If you move by page up and
press it four times, WE would say 40% If you moved it with JAWS, it
would say 70%. I don't know of any actual shortcut keys other than
these. There is one other item I would like to address. Sometimes,
when I press page up let's say 5 times, the playback seems to be a
little faster than when pressing playback on the same track using JAWS.
I can't say whether this is all of the time, but it has happened. It is
a really simple program. Have fun with it.

I do know that the latest version, which I did not like for some reason,
said that it would work on Win8, but that was before Win10 came out.
The only thing I can tell you is to try it out and see if you get an
error.
You can speed up or down, change pitch up or down and then, you can
change both, sort of like speeding up a cassette tape. I use it every
day as my husband and I listen to a program where the speaker is just
too slow for us. Typically, I will listen to most podcasts at about 40%
for technical stuff I want to hear, and around 65-70% for things I want
to get the main ideas from. Audio books are among the 50% group. It is
a nice little program and I hope the older version works for you.
Here is a little help item for you:
If you are listening to something you have increased or decreased the
setting for, it is necessary to press ctrl-P, which is the staart hot
key, twice. The first press releases the change you are already
listening to and the second press opens the program again so you can set
new options.
Take care,
Carol

I have a little program which is called pacemaker. It works great with
my Win7 pc. There is an older version and a newer one. I like the
older one for some reason. There are a few limitations when using
external drives as they don't always keep up with the accelerated
speed. When playing music, once you start speeding it up, say over 40%,
you begin to hear some distortion, but for what you want, it is
certainly workable. I found the file by doing a search for winamp
pacemaker. If you can't find it or need help, write me back and I will
search my old external drive to see if I can find the file.

Now I have another question about WinAmp. I heard some time ago that
there is an addon to Winamp that could change the pitch of music in
Winamp. I heard, however, that it was not very accessible. Is that
true, Are there addons that can change the pitch or speed in Winamp?
If
there are such addons and if they are accessible, they would be very
helpful for me when learning a new piece of music.
Thanks again to all of you who tried to help me.

Hello. The keys for shifting the balance are shift plus alt plus the
five keys from left to right (unless your speakers are reversed) h is
all the way to the left, j is partially left, k is centered, l is
partially right and semicolon is all the way to the right. This should
help bring the volumes closer together.

surround but I changed it to sterio.
Thanks any way. Maybe someone else will have some suggestion.

Peter, Sorry, but I didn't realize that you were referring to
surround
sound. I'm still using old fashioned stereo here, and like it that
way
<smile>. However, Winamp is also supposed to handle surround sound,
so I
would just keep inquiring, and maybe you will come up with an
answer.
This must be more than a little frustrating.
Good luck, and once again, sorry I couldn't help.

Peter, I saw your previous queries concerning Winamp, but saw it a
day
after it was originally posted, so thought someone might have
already
answered your questions. I will try to answer the questions I think
I
can, and leave the rest to those who might be more expert on the
rest.
When it comes to balancing channels, just press alt+shift+k while
playing an audio file or stream and you will be in business.
To read the title, press ctrl+shift+t.
When it comes to the volume with MIDI files, the only thing I might
suggest is to turn on your equalizer alt+g, then ctrl+tab to focus
on
it, and then use your preamp settings, and turn them all the way
up.
This will only work using a screen reader, particularly Window-Eyes
if
you have the Winamp scripts installed. Otherwise, the equalizer is
almost impossible to work with by a blind user.
Your Winamp keys are tab for turning down the volume of the preamp,
and
grave accent for increasing the volume.
Turning the equalizer up is not the answer in every situation,
because
on some files, turning it full blast can cause a lot of unwanted
distortion.
Now, after having said all that, I'm not really sure if the
equalizer
will work with MIDI files, because I haven't played around with
those
things for many a year, but it can't hurt to give it a try.
To save the settings permanently, while in the equalizer, press the
letter s, and you will see an option to save presets. Give those
settings that you have just made to a file with a name of your
choosing,
and if you wish to use those settings again, you can reload them at
any
time you like. The file will be placed in the list of the various
settings that Winamp makes available.

Larry

Hello all,
I have a few questions about WinAmp which I hope the experts can
help me
with.
1. I notice that when playing an audio file in Winamp, one channel
sounds
just a little softer than the other. This is not the case when I
play the
same file in Windows Media player. Is there any way I can adjust
the volume
of
each channel individually?
2. While playing an audio file in Winamp, is there a key stroke I
can use to
read the title of the file?
3. When I play a MIDI file in my collection, the volume drops to
very low
even though Winamp shows that I am playing the file at 100%
volume.
I can go
to the System tray and crank up the volume, but as soon as the
file
is
played, the volume drops when I play the file again. This
behaviour
doesn't
happen when I play MIDI files on line. What can I do to make the
volume
setting permanent?
4. I have heard that WinAmp can be used to play flash player files
on
YouTube. Is this true and how is it done if it is so?
My OS is Windows 8.1. I am using the "free" version of Window-Eyes
9.5.4
and I have both the WinAmp apps from Rod and Geoff Bishop. My
WinAmp version
is 5.666.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
