Window-Eyes 9.5.4 didn't change the table reading commands for PDF to the
same ones used for HTML. So you first have to turn table mode on, and then
use insert-arrow combinations to navigate the table. You probably have your
best shot at PDF table accuracy if they can produce a tagged PDF, but if
they go to all that work they might as well do HTML, I think. If they don't
tag the PDF, sometimes things will look like a table but not be interpreted
as such by screen readers. Also, how tables are displayed in PDF can depend
on whether you have Adobe Reader set to page-at-a-time or full document
mode.

Subject: Recommendation on preserving & navigating tables in a PDF
I need some advice. I was contacted by our local small town bus
transit manager to help them improve accessibility on their website
when using a screen reader. For various reasons they need to give a
link for screen reader users to go to route tables. I think I
convinced him an html table would best be readable when moving cell
by cell and hearing the column header information. But, he still
wanted to know if there is a way to make a PDF easily navigable with
a screen reader. The sample PDF he gave me would only allow me to
move down using the dedicated down arrow key. Insert + down arrow
would not navigate as it does in an html table. Is there a way to
make a PDF table function as an html one when navigating?
Thanks,
Jeff
