if GIMP has distortion (and esp. if it has warping) then it may work; i've found the interface a bit cumbersome. also, raster-based tools like GIMP and photoshop require a huge amount of memory and scratch disk; since you have to choose an ideal --common-- resolution and resample/resize all your images to that resolution. That's one advantage of the Knitter and Map Warper... you don't have to commit to resampling until the whole thing's done, so you're not manipulating a zillion-by-zillion pixel bitmap with a zillion layers.
you can see a basic version of this process on a per-image basis in the video on the front page of cartagen.org/maps <http://cartagen.org/maps>but in the latest version there is also a button to turn on a tiled base layer (satellite imagery) to warp against for reference. The video shows only warping against OpenStreetMap vector data, which only works if there's some map data already in that area. if you start flying and begin to use GPS-located markers (big cloth Xs on the ground at known locations) i'd be happy to add the ability to geolocate matching spots in the Knitter interface. I know some archeologists who use that technique but haven't had much demand for it yet. but that's a conversation for the cartagen-dev list<http://groups.google.com/group/cartagen-dev>, perhaps, or the grassroots mapping list<http://groups.google.com/group/grassrootsmapping> Best, Jeff On Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 5:05 AM, Valent Turkovic <valent.turko...@gmail.com>wrote: > On Tue, 14 Sep 2010 11:12:31 -0400, Jeffrey Warren wrote: > > > there are lots of techniques but might i suggest Map Warper > > (warper.geothings.net) or the Cartagen Knitter (cartagen.org/maps) which > > output WMS/TMS, GeoTiff. > > > > many people just use photoshop with GDAL.
