i came up with a few ideas last night, all needing some work to
complete them, but then jon burgess said earlier in this thread that
it was already done in mapnik. is osmarender a completely different
system, or is there some other good reason that method can't be used
here?

thanks for the offer of help, i will put some ideas up here as soon as
they are in a more friendly form
