The "role" of the node within the relation may be applicable, but is
perhaps a bit limited for what you are thinking of.

You mean adding more tags to the relation? Feel free. Remember that
relations can also contain other relations, so you could model a
complex situation (e.g. turn directions, similar to turn restrictions)
as a relation itself, which becomes part of the greater route
relation.
