I've been taking this approach aswell, eg: 
http://openstreetmap.org/?lat=-4.07891&lon=39.66457&zoom=15&layers=B00FTF 
I've added nodes where the coastline and the road meet and tagging them 
with "amenity=ferry_terminal"
