It would seem that the tag is well used, there are 9787 amenity=recycling tags in the db. There is a fair list of tags along the lines you suggest with about fifty different tags, including a few misspellings. Popular ones are: cans, bottles, batteries, clothes, cardborad, glass, glass_bottles, green_waste metal, magazines, newspaper, paper,plastic, plastic_bottles,scrap_metal, shoes, white_goods, wood. There are a few strange tags too: amenity=recycling;religion=christian;denomination=catholic. amenity=recycling;sport=football.
