I also like the 3 column layout as it is a lot more inviting to potential new recruits than the current page.
Map thumbnails also seem like a good idea although I would drop osmarender as a thumbnail and replace it with a topographic hiking map or maybe a rotating spot for the likes of cloudmade/ito to show off what can be done with the data.
