Thank you all for the robust discussion. I now know when it is and is not appropriate to use contour lines. However, having traced along the 170m contour I now have a 'better' shape for the reservoir water. I can now use this new outline to cross-reference with the Yahoo! aerials.
I'm still tempted to get an RC boat and tape the GPS on top. Thanks, Andrew PS Andy - the CycleMap looks fantastic. Beautiful, in fact.
