I wonder how much of that is down to us seaming needing to change every cities name when in English but foreigners being happy using the English spelling (especially the Latin alphabet countries)?
Just from the top of my head we have Munich - München Cologne - Köln The Hague - Den Hagg Ghent - Gent Dusseldorf - Düsseldorf (okay, understandable as English doesn't have umlauts) Hanover - Hannover Although the English spelling of one of Nottingham's twin towns is Timișoara....
