There are already a lot of icons out there, although at various places. I always start my search at http://projects.opengeo.org/geosilk/ or https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Map_Icons But like every other content on the net, things are not persistent. A central and maintained (!) repository would be great, but it is really not an easy job.
