+1, as other have pointed out: the "standard" depends heavily on the map style. Instead of one standard set maybe it would be nice to have at least 2 or 3 "standard sets"

Would it be possible to categorize these standard sets?
Looking at the Tango icon guidelines for example (that's the icon project of GNOME), probably we can do similar things for maps.

I imagine the following "flavors" of icons:

1) boxed / unboxed (add a background circle/rect/... around)
2) contrasted by additional outline / uncontrasted
3) unicolor / multicolor

However, the basic icon may (probably, I'm not sure, this is an idea only) be the same for all of these icon sets:

- the content of the icon is possible to set up in "pure" flavor: unboxed, uncontrasted, unicolor - enrichment of that icon can be done by colorizing it (=> unboxed, uncontrasted, multicolor)
- boxes and contrasts could be added automatically:
Boxes: set the box shape (circle, ellipse, rectangle, ....) and a box color and calculate the box around Contrast outline: copy the icon, expand it, color it in a defined contrast color and add it as a background to the original icon

probably that could allow to create one icon set that is useful for many (but not all of course) maps.

regards
Peter
