+1, I'd also use 3
2 is generally discouraged and 1 is far less elegant, heavier on the db and an
annoyance to edit. Also, the coastline _is_ the border of the island, with var.
1 it would look like a simple coincidence, so also semantically IMHO 3 is
preferable.
