That's totally understandable. Though to do that, I usually scroll. I'm accustomed to behavior where I scroll if I want to zoom without centering, and double click if I want to zoom and center.
Though I'm sure there are issues like touch screen interfaces where using a scroll wheel isn't an option. I totally support the change, and I'm sure I'll get used to it soon enough.
